Locating and applying for federal employment can be a daunting task, but you don’t have to go it alone. Take advantage of the expert and free services available at any military family support center’s employment readiness program.

The Front Door/Back Door Approach

You want a federal job. You know how to locate them and how to apply for them. You’ve been there, done that, and pushed the “Submit” button on more than one occasion. Now, you are just sitting back and waiting for the telephone calls and interviews sure to come.

If only it were so simple.

When you are applying for a non-federal job in the civilian world, you know that networking is key. You know that you have to reach out and connect with potential employers about opportunities within their organizations.

It’s no different in the federal world, but many applicants somehow fail to see it that way. Sure, your application has to meet certain requirements. That’s a given. Don’t make the critical error, however, of thinking that the traditional concept of networking doesn’t apply here.

As you identify federal job opportunities, work to establish a “back door” relationship in the process. Meet the employer. See if there is an option to schedule an “information interview” with him or her to learn more about the position before you apply for it.

When you conduct an information interview, you not only learn more information about the job and the agency than is given on the announcement, but now you become a known candidate.

Employers are more likely to take a second, closer look at your application if they already know you and know that you are interested in the job.

You become more than just a name on a referral list. You become real!
